Promoting Fundamental British Values at The Chase

The chase 188At The Chase, we are committed to actively promoting fundamental British values to ensure our students are well-prepared for life in modern Britain. These values - democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs - are embedded across our curriculum and wider school life.

Democracy and the Rule of Law

We help students understand the importance of democracy and the rule of law through a range of subjects and activities. In PSHE and Character Education, students explore the role of parliament, law-making, and the consequences of breaking laws. History examines the impact of dictatorships and democratic systems, while English Literature provides insight into justice, morality, and governance through texts such as Julius Caesar, Lord of the Flies and A Christmas Carol. Physical Education reinforces the importance of fair play, rules, and consequences in sport, mirroring legal principles in wider society. Additionally, subjects like Computing, Food Technology, Product Design and Art cover laws related to safety, consumer rights, and ethical responsibilities.

Individual Liberty

We encourage students to develop their independence and personal responsibility. Character Education lessons cover human rights and the importance of responsible decision-making. English explores themes of personal freedom in texts such as Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, while Religion, Philosophy & Ethics (RPE) examines moral dilemmas and historical figures who have fought for liberty, such as Martin Luther King. Physical Education teaches students about personal choice and responsibility within sports, while subjects such as Computing, Art and Food Technology explore ethical considerations and sustainability, encouraging informed choices about consumption and environmental impact.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We foster an inclusive environment where all students are encouraged to respect diversity. PSHE and RPE lessons explicitly address discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice, while subjects such as English and History examine themes of tolerance through literature and historical events. Language lessons expose students to different cultures and traditions, reinforcing the importance of understanding and respect. Physical Education promotes teamwork and inclusivity, while Food Technology, Textiles, and Art explore religious and cultural traditions from around the world.

Enrichment and Wider School Life

Beyond the curriculum, we provide enrichment activities that reinforce these values, including school debates, student leadership opportunities, and participation in national awareness events. Students are encouraged to take on responsibilities within the school community, preparing them to be active, engaged citizens.

Through our broad and balanced curriculum, as well as our wider school ethos, The Chase ensures that students develop a deep understanding of British values and are equipped to contribute positively to society.
