Homework is a key part of our curriculum with the expressed aim of stopping the forgetting from happening.
Homework provides the opportunity for the memorisation and interleaving of both current and past learning to ensure powerful knowledge sticks and students revise effectively for their assessments.
Homework is used as a tool for students to consolidate their learning and revisit what has already been acquired through the delivery of the curriculum during lesson time.
Students will be trained to develop the skills they need to learn the most powerful knowledge of their subjects.
How do I know what homework has been set? |
Each subject has a specific homework hand in day each week. This doesn’t change. For example, Maths will always be due in on a Wednesday. A copy of this schedule for each year group is on the website. |
My child has not completed their homework on time, what happens next? |
If a student does not complete their homework on time they will be scheduled to attend a DHS (Directed Homework support session) at the next available date. The purpose of this is for them to catch up on the missed homework so that no gaps in learning open up. Students who complete homework but miss the deadline will also be scheduled to attend DHS. We believe that developing organisation and time management skills are a vital part of a student education, which is why we believe meeting deadlines is so important. |
How does my child get informed they have DHS? |
Parents and students will receive a notification via their relevant BromCom apps. Parents notifications come through the My Child At School (MCAS) app and students via the Student Bromcom app. Students are also reminded they have a DHS session by the form tutors. Finally, classroom teachers of the final lesson of the day will remind students just before the end of the school day. |
Why has my child been scheduled to attend DHS when they were absent on the day the homework was due in? |
We insist that all students complete their homework as we do not want gaps in knowledge to occur. When a student has had to miss school they have missed vital learning time which they will need to catch up on. Homework is one way of ensuring this catch up happens. Homework is always available for students to complete at least 3 days before the deadline, therefore even if a student is off for 1-2 days, we would still expect them to be able to complete the homework tasks. If a student is off for a longer period of absence, we would still expect all the homework to be completed, but a DHS would not be immediately issued. |
What happens if my child does not attend their DHS session? |
If a student fails to attend a DHS session without good reason, they will then be issued with a Year Leader detention in order for them to catch up on work missed. |
At the Chase, homework is a key part of our curriculum, and it has the expressed aim of 'Stopping the forgetting from happening.' Current educational research shows that without revisiting and revising new knowledge, 90% of learning is lost after 60 days.
Therefore, homework is used as a tool for students to consolidate their learning and revise what has already been acquired through the delivery of the curriculum during lesson time. In year 11, students will have at least one piece of homework a week from each subject.
Any missed homework will result in a Designated Homework Support Session (DHS) being issued to allow the student to catch up. This is a negative behaviour point and will impact the student's Prom Points.
To avoid confusion over the expectations of the completion of homework, please see the table below outlining the expectations for each subject.

You must spend at least 20 minutes per subject (Literature and Language). Quiz expectations involve 15 minutes of revision and note making on the designated Knowledge Organiser or novel section. Notes can go in the back of books or a separate notebook but need to be there as proof of study. The quiz should take around five minutes. If study/revision has been done effectively then it is reasonable to expect at least 50% of the answers to be correct. If the score is below 50% and if proof of study in note form cannot be provided then a C2 will be set for inadequate homework. |
