On 27 November, a group of Year 11 students visited the University of Birmingham. The day began with a warm welcome to the university and an introduction to higher education.
The students were then divided into smaller groups, with University Student Ambassadors leading them on tours of the campus. After lunch, the group participated in Course Pictionary, an interactive activity designed to highlight different university courses. This was followed by a current student offering insights into what it's like to study at the university. The day concluded with a student panel Q&A, where the students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn directly from current university students.
Students were asked which activity they most enjoyed:
“The tour and the smell of food. This is because it made me feel like a real student and gave me a wonderful idea of student life and movement around campus.”
“Going through the real working university with the student. It's interesting as provides real time feedback for the questions.”
“ Tour guide was very informative and helpful. They had a lot of knowledge about the university and were quick to answer any questions.”
“Seeing the outside sports facilities because it’s cool to see how different they are compared to secondary school.”
72% of students stated that since the visit they were now more interested in studying at university.
Students were asked about what subject and career they are interested in pursuing, areas include physiotherapy, nursing, geography, business, journalism, maths, computer science, law, psychology, sport, engineering, physics, criminology, dance, sport, teaching, art, architecture, nutrition, archaeology, construction, CAD modelling, computer engineering and aeronautical engineering.
Overall, it was an extremely positive and engaging experience for the students, helping them understand university life and the campus environment more clearly.
